As previously mentioned, Terra is in it with us. She pretty much loves anime and is starting to get into manga. I started with totally safe stuff, but have more recently been dipping toe in what could or could not be considered "okay" for an 8 year old to watch. We are pretty liberal with our upbringing however, so if it isn't straight up sex or gore it pretty much goes. That being said, what have you shown a "kid" and been okay with? Keep in mind, at 8, she is reading well, but will rebel after one episode of subs or start complaining they are too fast, so dub is still preferred. Seen/Read: My Hero Academia (probably her favorite right now) Precure - netflix edition My Roomate Is a Cat (LOVED this one) All Ghibli movies aside from Mononoke and the Tanuki ones Actually, pretty much all anime movies (Mary and the Witches Flower, Mirai, Boy and the Beast, Lu Over the Wall, Summer Wars, etc) Pokemon (etc, all) Haunted House (actually Korean) Yokai Watch Sailormoon (majority of the manga read, this was also on the edge of being acceptable believe it or not!) Probably more I haven't thought of yet. She really likes a lot of it, and kept up really well with Hosai's movies, I thought I would lose her with the time travel in Mirai, but she instantly got it. Some things we are working on: Ranma 1/2 Soul Eater Hare+Guu (this was the first one on the edge of being acceptable - it is so stupid and sometimes sexual, whoops) Youtsuba manga Himouto - Umaru-chan (I was surprised by this one actually being okay, dunno why I was expecting an Oreimo instead, lol) Yay for the next generation.

we're in the same quest for which ones my 10 yr old son can watch. i need to watch a bit more soul eater, but the pilot seemed a bit much for my liking for him
but he rather enjoys my hero academia, and pokemon, and has seen a bit of yokai watch.
ranma...there's a reason my brother kept it from me utnil i was 17 or 18...and it wasn't because it just wasn't available yet...
the real downside is that he like me and his sister has tourette's and hasn't gotten the hang of reading subtitles at full speed yet, so will only watch dubbed. the reason tourette's gets brought up is that some of our tics involve our eyes twitching rapidly throwing our vision out of focus for a second...so in reading both he and i frequently end up reading the same paragrraph 3 or 4 times trying to track where we had previously read it to. manga he'd probably enjoy more once he moves past just reading the same 4 zelda ones he has

I love, love, love Skip Beat and that author/mangaka's first work, Tokyo Paradise. Both satisfy your "safe" definition, I think. My niece was in love with Fruits Basket when we introduced that to her, too. I feel like you can basically just go back in time 15-20 years and pick up most Shoujo and call it safe. Probably true for a lot of the Shounen, too, although I don't think I would show Recca to a kid under 14. Ippo remains a solid option. And our niece, when she was 14, loved watching Ippo with us. I don't know if that would be true for an 8 year, but it should be true for Aman's 10 year old. I don't recall if Ippo has a dubbed version...we're elitests around here. Edit: Oh, there's that bike one.... The one where the guy rides a granny bicycle and is crazy fast on it. I'll ask Paul for the name. Edit #2: Found it. Yowamushi Pedal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yowamushi_Pedal

I don't know anything about Skip Beat or Tokyo Paradise, I'll have to look into those!
She liked Fruits Basket at first, but I think it started to lose her when it got into the more deeply emotional stuff, somewhere around episode 14 of first season. I think she's not able to connect at that level yet. I'll definitely try it again when she's older.
I didn't know that was what Yowamushi Pedal was about, I'll try it. She hasn't been into any sports anime so far (guessing Ippo would be in there). Same thing with straight-up fighting stuff (Yu Yu, DBZ, even Yugioh) yet... doesn't mean that won't change. Seems to gravitate towards magical girl (well, duh), comedy and animals the most.

my wife's made the agreement that our kids can watch fushigi yuugi when they are 13.
we let my daughters watch K, because it was good...but at the same time, thought neko might be a bit much for our son...but that was such a good series /me reminds self to go watch the latest season that's more back story

Aman, you do both remember that Fushigi Yuugi has rape, attempted rape, and a lot of death of the main character's friends, right? If you don't remember that, maybe rewatch all of it without your girls first.

Yeah, we remembered, tis why my wife was watching it with them. That's not a "here's the DVD, knock yourself out kid" kinda show.

I think Fushigi Yuugi is okay at about 13 years old, given that they are pretty mature and understand the generalized idea of sex, rape and war at that point. Honestly in today's age, under 13 year are probably exposed to worse. Terra hears the word 'rape' often on any news program and so far hasn't asked too many detailed questions, but I'm sure it's coming. It's sad, but true.
Doesn't keep the story from being epic.

What series are you referring to here? Fruits Basket? I feel a little lost.

Never heard of it. Will have to look it up. Any anime with an ending deserves a chance nowadays. I'm on a no-ending boycott.

Oh...believe it or not, this is something I can actually help with! I've been showing some stuff to my aunt in the last five years or so, and she's a massive wuss, so I pretty much have to choose things as if it's for a young child. 😅 I show stuff to my cousin's kids occasionally too, but mostly just the lighter Ghibli movies.
Leaving out anything you've already listed, here are a few of the things she has enjoyed:
Little Witch Academia Kamichu! Hakumei and Mikochi Space Dandy (has some silly fanservice at times, but nothing too extreme) Hyouka Flying Witch Barakamon Yuri!! on ICE Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Chihayafuru 3gatsu no Lion (might be too slow/boring for a kid, it's a bit depressing at times too) Hataraku Maou-sama! aka The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (has some light fanservice, and the last couple eps might be a little intense for a kid) Yurucamp△ Mushishi (again, might be too slow/boring for a kid)
Once we finish something I'm going to show her Carole and Tuesday.
There might be a few I'm forgetting, will update if I remember.

ahaha, you don't think the "extreme" language in Carole and Tuesday will be too much? It isn't violent at all, but definitely sides with adults on political basis, freedom of speech and language. I loved it, but it deserves the MA rating. I see a few here I was wondering about and will check out! I was kinda curious if a kid would still like Yuri!! on ICE as 75% of the dialogue is sexual tension (between men, none-the-less, which I'm fine with). But curious how much of that going over a kids head would still entertain them. For now we are going to continue with the classics and start working these in as we go. There is a lot of Ranma 1/2 and now she's demanded to watch Dragonball (original)

My niece came to live with us when she was 13, but her mental and emotional level was closer to that of a 8 or 10 year old in most ways. She loved Yuri on Ice (watched it with her friends, not with us.) I haven't watched it at all, so I can't really speak to how much of it might go over people's heads. But I can say, a kid between the mental ages of 10-13 can enjoy it (and all her friends from high school also loved it.) P.S. She is now charting at a mental/emotional level that matches her physical age~ <3 Maturity levels are still behind what I think an 18 y/o should be...but she matches her friends and most of her peers for maturity, so maybe it's just a "back in my generation!!!" situation. =p
